Bailey Medical Center physical therapy team makes recovery fun!
There is a three-letter word Jamie McCann, DPT, clinic director at Bailey Medical Center (BMC), uses to describe what transpires between her staff and physical therapy patients. It’s a term that might throw a wrench into the preconceived notions about physical therapy.
“It’s fun in here and that always surprises people,” McCann said. “Many times, we’ll have people who didn’t want to come in because they expect to do all these things they don’t want to do. And 99% of our patients come in and are more pleasantly surprised.”
The BMC physical therapy team treats patients at a variety of stages in their health journey, including but not limited to, post-orthopedic surgery, fall prevention, vertigo, dry needling and helping intervene to avoid surgery.
“The patients we treat run the gamut,” McCann said. “Often, we are an option to preventing surgery. So many people think if their neck hurts that surgery is the likely solution down the road, but we can prevent surgeries 50-70% of the time and improve their outcomes.”
Unlike some treatment facilities, McCann said the physical therapy team takes a comprehensive approach to their patient care.
“We really pride ourselves on individualized care,” she said. “We treat the whole person instead of just one part of the body.”
Part of that approach circles back to making the patient’s experience both beneficial and enjoyable, according to McCann.
“It’s common for first-time patients to be scared when they come in,” she said. “They think physical therapy is going to hurt. I’ve had many people who didn’t want to come and now they say this is the highlight of my week. A majority of the time they leave here not hurting, but actually feeling better.”
